Lichen Diversity Project

Student members of the UMF Lichen Research Unit engaged in spatial analysis, quadrat sampling, specimen identification and cataloging, and GPS sampling. One of the goals of this long-term research project is to establish a GIS database for epiphytic macrolichen diversity in western Maine. This information will be used to examine potential correlates between lichen diversity and human health. Other objectives of the UMF Lichen Research Program include investigations of the spatial patterning of lichen colonization, the effects of competition on community structure, and the determinants of lichen community dynamics.
