Erosion and Sedimentation Dynamics of the Sandy River
Erosion and sedimentation dynamics of the Sandy River: a time variant comparison of selected locations on the river. Student assisted research involves collection of historical and present day ground , aerial (yes there are opportunities to fly missions), and satellite imagery of the Sandy River in Franklin county along with GPS and Total Station mapping of selected prograding bars and cut banks. Sample data collection and reduction from these selected locations will allow their accurate and complete characterization. Effects of flooding, ice jams, gravel removal operations and other natural and man-made impacts will be examined in light of the agricultural pursuits along the river. Data collected will be the input for models and programs developed by the Maine Geologic Survey in order to better manage the land and water resources of the Sandy River valley.
